100 Words on Life

Monday, January 31, 2011

[My darling friend Heather and I. Christmas 2010.]

Cool news - I was recently invited by Jenna of Lust, Love, Lose to share "100 Words on Life". The idea is to share what you know about fashion, life, and style in just a few words. I'm young and I have loads to learn, but here are a few things I know for sure!

If you haven’t worn it in 9 months, give it away.
No need to carry excess weight. Plus, someone out there might be able to use what you're not wearing! [If you're in Chicago give Sarah's Circle or Cornerstone Community Outreach a try - both organizations do a great job with donations.]

Walk everywhere, eat everything, dance shamelessly, stretch often.
In my limited experience, its the chicest, cheapest, most fun way to feel healthy.

Stop apologizing.
For being smart, for being beautiful, for being funny, for being irresistible. Save it for the occasions when you've actually messed up.

If you don’t completely adore it, don’t buy it.
Which brings me to my next point…

If you don’t feel great in it, don’t wear it.
There is nothing worse then being stuck in an outfit you don't feel like yourself in. This defeats the purpose (and the fun) of dressing. Let clothes be a reflection of your spirit.

If you wear nothing else, wear mascara.
It is my trusty secret weapon.

Be brave.
Take risks! Sometimes you'll succeed! The worst that could happen is that you'll fail, and in those cases we have several indestructible, no-fail tools on our side: a) family, b) friends, c) tea, d) music, and e) youtube videos of cute animals.

If you don’t laugh you’ll cry (and laughing is almost always better).
I've changed my mind - laughter is my secret weapon, not mascara. Though mascara is magical too :)

Need some more inspiration? Pop on over to the homepost on Jenna's blog, where you'll find more fabulous words of advice from Rosco Valentine, Blah Blah Becky, Emily's Fashion Finds, The Vintalogist, I'm Freestyling, and Dear Winnie.

Happy Monday, everybody!

We'll spend an hour, but no more than two

There are certain days, particularly when there is a blizzard outside, that I just feel like a slow dance. This is one of those days, and this is the go-to tune. It comes from Duffy's 2008 smash "Rockferry", so in the pop world its an oldie already, but I still love it.

Also, I am making some major changes around the site in the coming weeks, so if there are any hiccups or problems, forgive me! Everything will be back to normal soon.

Giddy Up, January

Dress: gift (thanks Emma)
Slip: thrifted
Belt: vintage
Necklace: Forever 21
Boots: thrifted
Lipstick: "Rogue Wave", Colorlab (thanks Marie)

Let it be known, from the valleys to the mountains: I. HATE. WINTER. If my lack of recent posts hasn't been an indication, my winter wardrobe is even thinner than my patience these days. Have you ever felt like you might shriek in pain if you see another little animated snowflake in the 5-day forecast? I have.

Little known fact: I spent the first years of my life living in Texas, land of perpetual summer. I attribute my withering tolerance for winter on the simple truth that I was just not meant to endure it. So, I am breaking out my cowboy boots and telling winter to jump off a cliff.

This is an indoors-only outfit, but that's fine by me!

Lovely Emma donated the dress to me last fall, but I haven't found the proper occasion for it until now! It's a difficult length and completely see-through, but the slip underneath it keeps it ladylike. The coolest thing about this outfit is the boots, I think - - I found them at a thrift store in Andersonville for somewhere in the neighborhood of $4.00. They look good with everything, and the leather on them is tough enough to be worn even in the snowy mess of January.

I do apologize for my lax posting - - I WILL BE BETTER!

May your Wednesday be joyful, and to you, January, I say...

GIDDY THE EFF UP.

January Who?

Dress: J Crew
Tights: Gap
Shoes: Payless
Necklace: gift, Macy's (thanks Mom)
Nailpolish: Chinaglaze, "Re-Fresh Mint"

I hope you all had an awesome New Year's Eve, and a relaxing, quiet New Year's Day. I worked all day the 31st, but still had plenty of time to get home, get dressed, and ring it in right.

As you know, I hate winter. January is also the hardest month of winter for me, so I'm trying to fight off impending blues by dressing as gleefully as I can. Just like I did a few weeks ago, I'm busting out some summer pieces to keep myself feeling sunny. This is what I'd be wearing out to dinner if I were rich enough to afford the vacay in San Francisco I've been dreaming of recently.

You can't tell, but the tights are a thick-knit ribbed eggplant color, and the shoes are an eggplant with ruffles on the toes (last seen in July). The dress is a joyous little shift found on sale at J Crew while shopping with my Mom last spring. I haven't worn it much, honestly, mostly for lack of the proper occasion.

This necklace was a Christmas gift from my Mom, and I am obsessed with it. The beads are this perfect pinkish orange color and completely clear - they look like little pieces of candy. It never lays exactly flat, but I sort of like that about it.

I haven't made any resolutions yet, but I'll make my first one now: make it through the winter with a smile on my face. How about you? Any resolutions?
