A Year of Pretty Things

It's my 1-Year Anniversary!

Babycakes for the occasion! :)

A year ago I was super frustrated. So I decided to start a blog as a sort of deposit box for things that made me happy. Vague, I know. 365 days later I'm still not sure what it is, but I know that there are people who read it and enjoy it, and that makes me unbelievably happy.

Favorite dress ever, unfortunately gone now...

Trip to New York City for Valentine's Day last year

A favorite necklace

An outfit I was very proud of, totally out of season, like I usually am :)

The first time I posted a photo of myself!

Working in some blue, which I honestly don't wear that often

Anna Sui glitter nails! The same celebratory glitter polish I'm wearing today!

From my first pie of last fall

I felt like a fall garden in this outfit

Outfit I wore for birthday 23!

Packing for New York City...for a 48 hour trip. Issues.

Chicago Botanical Gardens

Pretty shoes. Once again, as always, THANK YOU TO MY FABULOUS MAMA.

Something old [read: thrifted], something new, something borrowed, something blue. Gang's all here.

Things that don't match but "go"

Little Olive :)

A pile of boyish, girly clothes, my favorite kind

Dressing up like sprinkled baked goods is always an excellent plan

Getting illustrated, with my amazingly talented friend Lauren of My Closet In Sketches.

Putting on my big girl boots in preparation for the dregs of midwinter

Hearing Tavi of Style Rookie speak at the Hideout with Emma, definite highlight

It'd be pretty rad to gain a few followers via Google Friend Connect on the blog's anniversary, so if you haven't yet, you can click the "follow" button on the right side bar!
Here I am on Bloglovin', feel free to follow me there too.

I'm off to work, but here's the song/lyrics that inspired the title of the blog, and a video of Rufus performing it. I hope you all have an absolutely fabulous day!

"Pretty Things", by Rufus Wainwright

Pretty things, so what if I like pretty things?
Pretty lies, so what if I like pretty lies?
From where you are to where I am now...
I need these pretty things around the planets of my face
Everything's a sign of my astrology.

From where you are to where I am now
Is it's own galaxy.
Be a star, and fall down somewhere next to me.
And make it past your color TV
This time will pass, and with it will me, and all these pretty things...
Don't say you don't notice them.

Blazer: Target
Top: vintage
Belt: bought on the street in NYC
Shorts: H&M
Tights: unknown
Shoes: thrifted, originally Forever 21
Bracelets: somewhere in Paris (thanks Bizzy), somewhere in Hawaii (thanks Mom), stolen from sisters, street fairs, H&M

After a week of delightfully tolerable weather (hey, even a little rain is better than snow), my spirits have lifted and I'm beginning to get a few spring things into rotation.

These shorts are actual men's shorts, if you couldn't tell from the super long inseam. They're too big, in every possible way, but true to form, it didn't stop me from buying them! I've always wanted shorts like this, but the actually-made-for-women versions are always super tight around the thighs...aka, not me-friendly. These are very cool though, I always feel tough and girly at the same time when I wear them.

For clarification's sake - green bracelet: H&M, turquoise bracelet: Ann Arbor Art Fair (08? 09?), red bracelet: brought back from a Hawaii trip by my parents, yellow bracelet: bought for me in Paris by darling Bizzy, beaded bracelets: stolen from my sisters in middle school. I love wearing all of them at once, particularly with a top that is covered in so many awesome bright colors.

Speaking of the top, I bought it at new vintage boutique Krispyfringe in Ravenswood and have been DYING for the weather to wear it. It has buttons down the front, but I prefer them in the back when worn with a blazer - - cleaner lines, less clutter. It may still be a little chilly to justify a sleeveless silk shell, but ah well. I just couldn't wait anymore!!!

Colors, colors, colors!

This Wednesday will mark the 1-year Anniversary of So What If I Like Pretty Things. I literally can. not. believe it. So, so many thanks to the people who come back to read, leave comments, and follow me. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know there are people out there enjoying it. If any of you have questions about the blog (or about life in general), feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll try to answer it on the Anniversary post!

Happy President's Day to all!

SUNSHINE + quick outfit + "Marathon"

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Top: H&M
Cardigan: thrifted
Skirt: Banana Republic
Tights: unknown
Shoes: thrifted, Seychelles
Necklace: Forever 21
Nailpolish: "Make Mine Mango", Revlon

I am 100% incapable of focusing on anything when the weather turns beautiful in the spring. That being said, it's 50 and sunny in Chicago. I'll make this a quick post :)

I'm only posting an outfit today because I'm so excited about this little necklace I found Sunday while shopping with my dear friend Ashley. It's a baby camera!! It makes me smile every time I look at it.

Today's song celebrates the first lovely day of the year! It's called "Marathon", by Denver-based duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, better known as Tennis. It's gritty and sunny and perfect as the last of the dirty blizzard snow melts away.

[a pretty, random and unofficial youtube video I stumbled across]

I'm off to enjoy the sun! Hope your day is glorious!

Valentine's Day, in green

Monday, February 14, 2011

Top: Banana Republic
Belt: Ann Taylor, gift (thanks Mom)
Skirt: Forever 21
Tights: Gap
Shoes: Lela Rose for Payless
Bracelet: unknown, gift (thanks Mom)
Earrings: vintage/gift (thanks Gram)
Nailpolish: "Make Mine Mango", Revlon

Valentine's Day is the best and the worst - - I love the idea of everyone celebrating the people they love, but it can also be full of cliché and forced affection. I always feel one half happy/optimistic and one half nauseous on this day, and this outfit seems to capture that. Optimistic and happy in shape, muted and slightly green in color. :)

Bought this top for New Year's Eve 2010, and have only worn it a handful of times since then (including this long-ago outfit!). It's beautiful, but too fancy for everyday wear. Since February 14th is a pretty fancy day, it seemed appropriate.

These shoes (last seen here and here) aren't really meant for winter wear, but good news - IT'S BEEN IN THE 40S IN CHICAGO FOR TWO WHOLE DAYS! Premature as I may be, but I am taking that as my cue to break out the awesome footwear again. As much as I love my Sorels, if I have to wear them one more time I am going to sink into a hole of depression.

I would like to take this moment to formally thank Forever 21 for making the best skirt in the universe. Solid cotton stretch, mid-calf length, high-waisted, comes in four thousand colors, and costs $6.80. (They don't have the exact one I'm talking about online, but here's a close version.) True, the shape seems directly lifted from American Apparel, but I have to say my AA ones stretched out irrecoverably after 4 wears. My Forever 21 versions have NEVER failed me, and they cost wayyyyyyy less.

A wee bit of shine in the belt, though I leave most of the shining to the lovely earrings my Grandmother passed down to me.

I hope your Valentine's Day is filled with love, happiness, and as little cheesiness as possible. Unless you're into cheese, and in that case I hope it's the cheesiest day ever! Full of cheddar and gouda and jarlsberg and brie!

Buffalo gals won't you come out tonight

Blouse: J Crew
Dress: gift, J Crew (thanks Mom)
Necklace: Forever 21
Belt: bought from a street vendor in NYC
Tights: HUE
Shoes: Sears
Nailpolish: "Go Go Green", Maybelleine

Happy Friday everybody! It's been a busy week, and I'm starting to see some positive things on the horizon. I hope you're feeling the same way. Fashion Week in New York has been awesome to watch so far. What websites, bloggers, editors, and/or other cool folks are you watching for coverage?? I'd love to know!

And now, an optimistically spring-y winter outfit!

I'm a big fan of the sheer trend happening at the moment, but I also lack the bravery to pull off something uber seductively see-thru (a la Richard Chai Spring 2011). But I do have some lovely sheer blouses, and I've found a way to make them feel delicate and pretty without being too in-your-face - - layering over other patterns. I like how the buffalo check comes through the little flowers on the blouse.

This dress was a Christmas gift from my Mom - she knew how much I loved it, so she bought it and wrapped it up for me under the tree! It's extremely short and a weeeeee bit on the small side, but with opaque tights and a flowy top you can't tell at all. This is honestly the first outfit I've assembled with this dress in it that I actually like.

I'll be wearing this early next week - - I'm hearing rumors that we may hit the high 30s in Chicago!! (How sad is it that I get giddy at the very idea of temperatures above 30...?)

A big THANK YOU to all the recent commenters and followers. You make my day, every day.

[Hideout. Feb 2011]

Last weekend I went to the Interview Show at the Hideout with Mark Bazer. I heard via a random flyer that one of my favorite bloggers, Tavi of Style Rookie, would be there speaking and I couldn't resist the opportunity to hear her speak!

Not only did she give a great, adorable, honest interview (in which she talked about her new magazine, bullies, and being herself), but I got to meet her afterward! She was incredibly nice and normal...such a joy to talk to. Here's a picture that the sweet Ximena of Chicago Now took of me, Tavi, and my roommate Emma (yes, the same Emma who is responsible for lots of my favorite closet finds!).

Mark Bazer was hysterical, the other interviewees were very interesting, and we also stayed for fantastic sets by Portland/Seattle bands The Quiet Life and Moondoggies. Such a wonderful evening.

Other than that, things have been a little tough as of late. So I decided to post a track from a band that never fails to make me feel comforted - The Weepies. The title track, "Hideaway", from their 2008 album is the musical equivalent of a large mug of tea, warm blanket, and a shoulder massage. I think so, anyway! Check out the very sweet music video below.

Tube top: H&M
Lace shirt: Target
Cardigan: H&M
Belt: gift, Ann Taylor (thanks Mom)
Skirt: H&M
Tights: Gap
Shoes: Calvin Klein
Clutch: gift, vintage (thanks Mom)
Necklace: Banana Republic
Nailpolish: Sula, "Haze"

In case you somehow missed all the hullabaloo, Chicago had its third biggest blizzard ever over the past three days - so I've been hunkered down trying to stay warm since Tuesday! But now that I've made sufficient snowballs, angels, and men (and drank more wine than I'd care to admit), I'm back on the blog with an outfit I've been meaning to share for months.

I've always liked mixing things that don't exactly "go". So for this one, Tiffany blue, evergreen, and persimmon combine with calfskin, lace, and fake gold jewelry to create a not-so-serious, happy, silly-luxe ensemble. I've worn this to work, I've worn it out, I've worn it hanging in my apartment when I want to feel needlessly fancy.

The necklace is the blingiest thing I own, without a doubt. It can be tough to wear, but I've found the key is pairing it with equally silly, luxe-looking things. This nailpolish has barely left my fingers in the past few months - its the weirdest color, yet somehow looks great with everything.

I dug these shoes up at TJ Maxx with my Mom about four years ago, and they are major head-turners. They only come out of the closet for very special occasions (and outfits) - I adore them and want to keep them as long as possible. Since I have a history of wearing out shoes in about three weeks, certain precautions must be taken :)

I hope you're all surviving the freeze! At least its finally February, right?
