Friends, it’s citrus season! I love that the coldest, darkest months of the year give us some of the brightest treasures: lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits are everywhere and I’m putting them in evvvvvverything. Though I mostly wear neutrals and darker colors during winter, this year I’m feeling bright, zesty colors: especially yellow. These images were found on Pinterest, and I’ve pulled them all together for a little dose of sunshine.
Suits & Head-to-Toe Yellow
Here’s a crazy fact: at 31 years old, I have never once worn a full suit. I maintain that there are no options that actually look great on a female body that cost less than $2,000, and lord knows I do NOT have that kind of money to drop. That said, if I was going to go for it on a suit, I’m pretty sure I’d go the bright yellow route. It adds real sass to something that can otherwise be so stuffy. Until I can unlock the yellow-suit life achievement, I’ll try head-to-toe yellow as a strong alternative.
Dresses, Dresses, Dresses
When I worked as a personal shopper/sales associate at Banana Republic just after college, I worked on commission, and it was tough to get anybody to remember my name at the register. (Evidently Marie is more of a middle name than a first name. 😂) I started wearing this super bright mustard Shelli Segal lace dress I thrifted as often as possible, because when people forgot my name they’d just say “oh, the girl in the yellow dress”. It worked. I was even recognized by two guys on the street two years later as “that girl from Banana Republic with the yellow dress”… soooo maybe it worked too well!! But either way, nothing says sunshine & cheer like a yellow dress, in the summer or the winter.
Half & Half, or a strong splash of yellow
One large swath of yellow not only super charges energy in an outfit, it also brings out the essence in all the other elements. A splash of mustard is totally unexpected on a traditional trouser, and calls attention to the pleats. A yellow jacket provides a mod punch to an otherwise classic polka dot look. I also love how much yellow shows off fabric texture: the shininess of silk, the nubbiness of wool, the grid of linen, the weave of lace.
Accessories & Accents
Yellow is a perfect accent color. If you’re brave enough, you can make it work with anything. It’s tough not to equate yellow with the sun, because the comparison works so well! Yellow + orange or red = sunset warmth. Yellow + blue or green = midday, high summer sun. Yellow + neutrals = dusk or dawn, a blast of light in the dark. It draws the eye and creates a mood so effectively.
Have I convinced you?! Ready to wear all yellow all the time?! Good, me too. 😊
